9-1-06 Just had a week long 4100 mile trip thru the Mojave Desert on a huge pit delivery to San Francisco.
He bought a 42” diameter by 10 foot main chamber with upright slow smoker, fryers, log rack, sliding steak grill,
gas injection, & all the toys.

  weighs 5 tons.

There were PLENTY of Deer in West Texas. Ya gotta really watch out to avoid hitting one.
They run about 40 miles an hour, & they stand in the middle of the freeway in the Hill country,
wondering what those 2 bright shiny orbs are coming at them at 80 MPH.
They figure they will just outrun it when it gets where they are. I think that’s where the
problem begins. And of course it’s 90 degrees at 4AM traveling.

Music CD’s sure took the edge off the trip across the Deserts. Managed to still get a few
Tumbleweeds in the front grillwork along the way. Started the trip by sleeping during the daytime,
to get used to traveling at nite when it’s cooler for the tires on the vehicles.

Things are a lot more peaceful traveling nights The Desert has an almost etheric stillness
& peacefulness in the eerie moonlight. At least till one of those nite Desert Critters with
four inch fangs sinks em into your leg cause you wasn’t paying attention just then. Grin
.

I fully well expected The Mojave to be 135 degrees during the day, but it was a pleasant
80 degrees due to a cold front passing thru. NICE. Saw some Beautiful Sunsets though.

In the Desert, you Gotta wear the right Gear cause you never know what your gonna see.

 ======================================================-

Saw some interesting names of things along the way. Like the Dewdrop INN,
The NoTell Motel, The Bed & Bale Horse Motel, and on and on.

Around Amarillo Tx there is a place that serves a 72oz steak. Free if you can eat it all.
Tx raised the speed limit to 80, but I’m burning about 20.00 a hour in Diesel. OUCH. So on we go.

From the cactus blooms to the rows of Plateau’s lining the Horizon, the High Desert
is truly a Unique place. You can almost sense Geronimo & Cochise watching You.
I wonder if they ever dreamed what was coming next. All the concrete & building & all?

Smoke Signals on the Horizon. Uhh Ohh.       Beautiful Church in Deming New Mexico

 ===================================================-

I even saw a Building that housed a Spanish Disco, Dancefloor & BBQ.

The Hatch, NM chili cropped took a 50% hit or more this year from all the rains.
These are some of the best chili’s in the USA. Managed to find 10 pounds of chili’s.

The iron horse stills runs the Desert, but at 60MPH. We have a little better Locomotives.

The cold Desert floor below the Mountains after dawn was truly an eerie blue color.
Yet it seemed somehow renewed, from the heat of the day before. With the sky clearing
of mist and cloud just after sunrise, clear sky & 115 degree heat remind us who’s Boss.

As the Sun starts to lift the cool air curtain of night, all sorts of little critters start to appear,
just waiting to be eaten. Grin. Telephone poles dot the landscape like manmade cactus in all directions.

In Flagstaff Arizona I actually saw a LARGE Meteor burn thru the Atmosphere
& finish just short of the ground a few miles in front of the truck. It was so bright,
I thought it was a Helicopter with it’s Beams on at first.

Stopped in Tombstone Arizona for a drink.    The conversation went South real quick.

======================================================-

    Some of the Canyon Rims & Streams were Absolutely Beautiful this Time of Year.

================================================-

   Stopped off to Camp in theMountains along the way.Fished a nice Stream but nada.
                                                                                      Dinner was a little Simple.

       Do ya like Mountain Heights & Climbing?

After the Delivery was made in the San Francisco area, I traveled the Hwy 5 all the
way down to San Diego for a few visits. Saw a nice car fire where two cars hit, wrapped
together & slid into a ravine by the hwy, hit a tree & caught fire. Hope the drivers made it ok.

One of my favorite stops to eat at is Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant in Van Horn, Texas.
Decent food, nice & cool inside, and also was a favorite of Football’s Carl Madden,
as well as a stopover for Selena when she used to tour. Selena was friends with the
Family that owns Donderaki’s Restaurants here in Houston, & she actually has her Movie
premier down the street from my shop at the Tinseltown theater Complex on Hwy 290.

=========================================================-

On the trip back thru the West Texas Oil Well Country, I saw three Javalina out playing.

                             Ahh, the pungent smell of Sweet West Tx Crude.
